Author's Statement:

I wrote this book following a major project of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Kim Stafford and I put together a program in which I visited three Oregon communities, coached local writers to collectively write and put together a community history. The idea of an "encyclopedia", with A-Z entries made it possible for many writers to work on the project at once. The result was three community encyclopedias, two of which are now in print--Enterprise and Hood River. This book is a handbook for other communities that might wish to work on one on their own. Some copies may still be available through the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis and Clark. You're also welcome to e-mail me if you have questions.
