Notes From Custer
Poems and translations.
1975, Bear Claw Press
This book began as an adventure in the Black Hills of South Dakota. For months I embraced the landscape and people, learning the basics of translating old Lakota songs, and tape recording my observations as I hiked and drove around. This small collection includes my own poems and several translations of Lakota songs. If I had found a way to make a steady living, I’d probably still be there.
Best known for his short-short stories about “the boys,” Jim Heynen has published widely as a writer of poems, novels, nonfiction, and short fiction.
